Ungus Ungus Ungus at Shotkickers

Bit slow off the mark posting this one!

We headed out to Thornbury to see (and meet for the first time) the infamous Eggs playing saxophone with the algebraically inelegant Ungus Ungus Ungus (a.k.a. 3Ungus).

I didn't pay much attention to the support bands, which is not like me, but we were right up the back and busy chit-chatting. So I don't have anything to say about them.

This was my first visit to Shotkickers and the layout of the place doesn't really work when it's sold out like this show was. The area in front of the bar becomes a bottleneck, especially between bands. It'd be good with fewer people though.

Ungus Ungus Ungus were launching their new album The Fun House and clearly have a dedicated fan base. This was another one of those times where I was among a completely different music crowd - the scene is just so vast.

I would describe Ungus Ungus Ungus as demented circus music. It is so impressive to successfully pull off this kind of combination of chaos and intricacy. They are obviously all very accomplised musos, and I am really just amazed that this can come together so well when the band members are scattered across multiple states.

Also impressive was that one of the bandmembers could actually scat! I have never seen this done well live before, even from serious jazz bands.

They were joined on the stage by Moonface, a scary character straight from the Mac Tonight advert except in a parallel universe. The presence of a second character, Portalface, might explain how Moonface got there.

To be honest the crowd was a bit much for me - I would've preferred to be able to hang back without being too far from the stage. (The Tote would've been perfect.) Potentially I am no longer 20 years old - I'll have to check my records and get back to you on that one.
