Birthday at the zoo

Birthday at the zoo
pygmippo

For the second year in a row I spent my birthday at Melbourne Zoo. It's just about the perfect day out when one also has evening plans: cute and weird animals to look at, fresh air, and not taxing on one's energy for socialising.

Adrian gave me a new 75-300 mm zoom lens for my OM-D micro four-thirds camera (which is equivalent to 150-600 mm in standard 35 mm). It's ideal for a zoo visit as it makes it possible to frame out the material elements of captivity and takes very sharp shots even with an unsteady hand or moving subject.

I made an album of my favourite photos. My Flickr account is getting good use at the moment!

Although we usually associate zoos with terrestrial animals, one of my favourite animals at Melbourne Zoo is the Port Jackson shark. They are such weirdos in their appearance and behaviour. Lemur island was also a highlight. It has airlocks so you can walk right into their space and hang out without being separated by anything. I am also a fan of the butterfly house, even more so with my new lens.

Strong possibility of doing this again next year!
